"Student Environmental Association (SEA) at The University of Michigan-Dearborn has been an inspiration to many local residents to get informed and get involved with environmental issues.  This group and LWVDDH joined forces as a part of the Dearborn Sustainability Coalition last year.  Although the ‘Coalition’ has dwindled, the SEA carries on with independent and focused activities and we still have mutual interests that warrant continued support and coordinated efforts.
This college group has been an important part of our active civic community.  For example, their Science Cafés feature local speakers offering local solutions, such as the panel presentation on native landscaping and the lesser-known topic of bird-friendly coffee (www.coffeehabitat.com).   They recently held a public forum, “Alberta Tar Sands and Keystone Pipeline Overview” and an “Earth, Ethics, and Religion” roundtable discussion, which were both well-attended.  Keep informed about their activities by visiting their website, sustainableum-d.blogspot.com"

Sustainability Fest 2011 (we're mislisted as "Students for Environmental Awareness")

SEA hosts a few events for Campus Sustainability Fest 2011.

10/21/2010  Dearborn Sustainability Roundtable III:  Higher Education and Community Outreach "Now You SEA Me, Now You Don't"
During Campus Sustainability Fest with special guest speaker Dr. Micheal Shriberg of the Graham Sustainability Institute.  Shriberg spoke about sustainability and the disjoint between concerned students and conservative institutional administration.  Making institutional sustainability happen at colleges was in some ways "possibly more challenging than lobbying politicians".  However, Dr. Janet Dunn pointed out that one advantage that commuter campuses have over other colleges is their potential for informal outreach to families--many students can educate their own families and neighborhoods about the things they learn and discover.

Henry Ford Community College covered this event (I'm happy to have finally found it one year later).

10/13/2010  "We prefer 'Environmentally Aware'..."
What an honor to be featured in a political cartoon!  Hot on the heels of the 10/10 walk for sustainability (note how we omit the phrase "green" in most of our actions), the SEA and Sierra Club were featured in a Political cartoon by the Dearborn Press and Guide's Daniel Saad  (best political cartoon Ian's ever seen--thanks for such a great and light-hearted cartoon Mr. Saad!)--since most of us read the press and guide online, we didn't know the paper had comics until June of 2011 when we noticed someone had clipped it, laminated it, and put it on a table for the Dearborn CARES festival 5k run!

10/10/2010:  Conscientious Recreation as Climate Action
Our actions in the world can be fun, for all ages, and meaningful--that's sustainability too!

The Michigan Journal
Unfortunately, we've lost many stories that covered the SEA's on-campus history since the newspaper migrated to a newer web host as of 2011.  Thankfully, a handful of physical clippings exist somewhere but we don't foresee anyone scanning/uploading them in the near future.

Beyond:
The SEA can trace its roots to the Dearborn Naturalist's Association (DNA) in the late 1960s to early 1970s.  The DNA did some fantastic things, the spirit of the organic garden remains on our campus today:
"UM-Dearborn first established an organic garden on its campus in 1970 through the efforts of the former Dearborn Naturalist Association, a University-sponsored student organization."
The SEA is rumored to officially come into existence sometime in the mid 1970s, and was revived in 2007 by Eric Bacyinski, an Environmental Studies and Political Science dual major who served as SEAs first President in recent memory.  We've noticed alumni from 1990 exist.

The SEA spearheaded a Focus The Nation summit on climate change (perhaps two?) under the leadership of Nabilah Ikram.  It took part in campus Sustainability Day in 2008 under Deirdre Devlin.

Throughout these years, the SEA had a conservation-oriented stance and brought engaging events and animal exhibits to the campus.
